Venetian Plaster
A polished mineral plaster that creates rich depth, soft movement, and light-reflecting surfaces.
Venetian plaster creates a luminous, polished surface, applied in thin layers to build depth and natural movement.
What is Venetian Plaster?
Venetian plaster is a traditional lime-based wall finish used to create smooth, polished surfaces with depth, movement, and a natural mineral sheen. Applied in multiple thin layers and compressed by hand, it develops a luminous surface quality that reflects light subtly and gives walls a sense of richness and dimension rather than appearing flat or painted.
At Skim Co, Venetian plaster is treated as a carefully built wall finish system rather than a decorative coating. Each project includes substrate preparation, colour and material direction, layered application, compression, and polishing appropriate to the surface and environment.
Venetian plaster is suitable for:
• Interior feature walls
• Living rooms and dining areas
• Entryways and stair halls
• Bedrooms and refined residential interiors
All Venetian plaster finishes are applied and finished by hand, allowing depth and subtle variation to develop through the layering and polishing process. The final surface responds to light throughout the day, revealing movement and tone within the mineral material itself.
Venetian plaster is best suited to clients seeking a refined alternative to paint, and who value depth, craftsmanship, and the quiet elegance of a polished mineral surface.
The Venetian Plaster Process
Consultation & Surface Assessment
Each Venetian plaster project begins with an evaluation of the space and substrate. We review the condition of the walls, existing finishes, and lighting conditions to determine the appropriate plaster system and preparation required.
Design, Colour & Material Direction
We establish the colour tone, level of polish, and overall character of the finish. Venetian plaster can range from soft satin movement to highly polished surfaces, so expectations around sheen, depth, and variation are set early.
Surface Preparation
Proper substrate preparation is essential for Venetian plaster. Walls are repaired, leveled where necessary, and primed with mineral-compatible products to ensure strong adhesion and an even working surface.
Base Layer Application
The first coats of plaster are applied in thin, hand-troweled layers to establish the body of the finish. These layers build the foundation of depth and movement that will develop through subsequent coats.
Compression & Polishing
As the final layers are applied, the surface is compressed with a steel trowel to refine the texture and develop the characteristic sheen. This stage brings out the depth, movement, and subtle reflectivity of the plaster.
Finishing & Curing
Depending on the location and desired finish, the surface may be sealed or burnished further. The plaster is then allowed to cure, leaving a durable mineral surface that will continue to develop character over time.

Venetian Plaster FAQ
-
Venetian plaster is a traditional lime-based wall finish made from slaked lime and fine marble dust. The material is applied in multiple thin layers and compressed with a trowel to create a smooth surface with natural depth and light reflectivity.
-
Unlike paint, Venetian plaster is a mineral surface rather than a coating. It is built up in thin layers and finished by hand, which creates natural movement, depth, and subtle variation that cannot be replicated with flat paint finishes.
-
Yes. Venetian plaster is commonly applied over properly prepared drywall, as well as other stable substrates. The wall must be smooth, structurally sound, and primed with products compatible with lime-based materials.
-
When properly installed, Venetian plaster is a durable wall finish that can last for decades. Because it is a mineral surface rather than a film like paint, it tends to age gracefully and can be repaired or refreshed if needed.
-
Venetian plaster can be tinted to a wide range of colours, though it is most commonly used in natural mineral tones such as whites, warm neutrals, limestone, and soft earth colours. Pigments are mixed directly into the plaster, producing depth and subtle tonal variation.
-
The level of sheen depends on the application technique. Venetian plaster can range from a soft satin finish to a highly polished surface. The final appearance is determined during the design phase based on the desired look for the space.
-
Venetian plaster is most often used on interior feature walls, living spaces, bedrooms, entryways, and other areas where a refined architectural finish is desired.
