Limewash

A breathable, mineral wall finish offering soft colour variation and depth.

Limewash offers an old-world surface quality, applied in thin layers for subtle depth and movement.

What is Limewash?

Limewash is a traditional, hand-applied wall finish used to create soft, matte surfaces with subtle tonal movement and depth. Applied in thin, layered coats, it produces an old-world surface quality that feels calm, lived-in, and inherently varied rather than uniform or painted.

At Skim Co, limewash is approached as a considered wall finish system, not a decorative afterthought. Each project includes surface preparation, colour and material direction, layered application, and curing appropriate to the substrate and space.

Limewash is suitable for:

• Interior feature walls

• Living spaces and bedrooms

• Hallways and circulation areas

• Dry areas within residential interiors

All limewash finishes are applied by hand, allowing variation and texture to develop naturally through the layering process. The final appearance is shaped by light, movement, and the mineral character of the material itself.

Limewash is best suited to clients seeking a soft, old-world alternative to paint, and who value texture, tonal depth, and material character over perfectly uniform finishes.

The Limewash Process

Design, Colour & Material Direction

Each limewash project begins with establishing colour tone, level of variation, and overall atmosphere. Limewash is inherently variable, so expectations around movement and patina are set early.

Surface Assessment & Preparation

Existing wall surfaces are assessed for suitability. Repairs, patching, and preparation are completed to ensure a stable, clean base appropriate for mineral finishes.

Base Conditioning

Walls are primed or conditioned as required to regulate absorption. This step is critical to achieving even curing and controlled tonal variation.

Layered Limewash Application

Limewash is applied by hand in multiple thin coats. Each layer is allowed to cure before the next is applied, allowing depth, texture, and movement to develop naturally.

Refinement & Visual Control

Between coats, surfaces are assessed and adjusted to balance texture, tone, and variation. This stage determines the final character of the finish.

Curing and Final Protection

The limewash is allowed to cure fully, developing its final colour and surface quality over time. No topical sealers are used unless specifically required for the application.

Limewash FAQ

  • No. Limewash is applied by hand and develops natural tonal variation and movement as it cures. This variation is inherent to the material and is part of its character.

  • No. Limewash is a mineral-based finish that reacts with the surface it’s applied to, rather than forming a film like paint. This creates a softer, more atmospheric appearance.

  • Limewash is suitable for dry interior walls only. It is not recommended for showers, wet rooms, or areas subject to regular water exposure.

  • Limewash is durable for interior wall applications but is not designed to resist abrasion or impact. It may mark or wear over time, contributing to a natural patina.

  • Limewashed surfaces should be cleaned gently. Touch-ups are possible but may remain visible due to the layered nature of the finish.

  • No. Limewash requires appropriate substrates and surface preparation. Suitability is assessed during consultation and preparation stages.
